We’ve all been there. You buy a beautiful, perfectly transparent spool of Crystal PLA, load it into your printer, and hit start on a custom vase or LED light cover. But when you pull it off the build plate, it’s not clear. It’s cloudy, frosted, and barely lets any light through.
What happened? Did you buy bad filament?
Probably not. The secret to printing truly transparent 3D models isn’t just about the plastic—it’s about how you lay it down.
In this guide, we are going to break down the exact slicer settings you need to eliminate the "frosted glass" look and get crystal-clear, transparent prints every single time.
Why Does Clear PLA Look Cloudy When Printed?
To fix the problem, you have to understand the enemy: light refraction.
When a 3D printer lays down plastic, it creates tiny microscopic gaps and curved edges between the layer lines. When light hits your printed object, it bounces off thousands of these internal layer lines, scattering in every direction. That scattering of light is what creates the white, cloudy, "frosted" look.
To get a glass-like finish, we have to eliminate those gaps and melt the layer lines together as completely as possible. Here is the 4-step cheat sheet to make it happen.
Step 1: Start with Bone-Dry, High-Quality Filament
You can have the best slicer settings in the world, but if your filament has absorbed moisture from the air, your print will look terrible. Moisture inside the plastic boils as it hits the hot nozzle, creating microscopic bubbles inside your print. Those bubbles scatter light and instantly turn a clear print cloudy.

Step 2: Turn Up the Heat
If you normally print PLA at 200°C, you need to crank it up for Crystal PLA.
Higher temperatures make the plastic more fluid, allowing the new layer to melt deeply into the previous layer. This essentially "fuses" the plastic together, erasing the internal gaps that scatter light.

Hotend Temperature: 215°C - 225°C

Bed Temperature: 55°C - 60°C

Step 3: Slow Down and Turn Off the Fan

Printing fast is great for prototypes, but it’s terrible for transparency. If you print too fast, the plastic doesn't have time to properly melt and fuse with the layer below it.
Furthermore, you want the plastic to stay hot for as long as possible after it leaves the nozzle so it can settle into any micro-gaps. This means your part-cooling fan is actually working against you.

Print Speed: 20 mm/s to 40 mm/s (Slower is always clearer).

Cooling Fan: 0% to 30% maximum. (If your print has steep overhangs, you may need a little fan, but keep it as low as possible).
Step 4: The Secret Sauce — Layer Height and Infill
This is where the real magic happens. Since layer lines cause light refraction, we want to create as few layer lines as possible.
1. Use Thicker Layers: Counterintuitively, a 0.12mm layer height will look much cloudier than a 0.28mm layer height. Why? Because 0.12mm has twice as many layer lines to scatter the light!

Setting: Set your layer height to 0.24mm or 0.28mm (if using a standard 0.4mm nozzle).
2. Optimize Your Infill: Grid or Gyroid infill will trap air pockets and ruin your transparency. You have two options here:

Option A (Vase Mode): Also known as "Spiralize Outer Contour." This prints a single, continuous wall with zero infill. This is the absolute best way to get a glass-like finish.

Option B (100% Infill): If you need a solid, functional part, set your infill to 100%. More importantly, change your infill pattern to Aligned Rectilinear or Lines. You want all the plastic strings running in the exact same direction to allow light to pass through.
